How to Prepare and Paint a Wooden Fence Like a Pro
Your wood fence has been standing tall, strong, and proud for years now. The paint, however? Not so much.
A great-looking fence does wonders to your home’s curb appeal. A fresh coat of paint can surely heighten your fence’s curb appeal while helping last even longer without it.
There’s only one thing getting in the way of you starting: You’re not exactly sure where to start. Well, you’ve come to the right place!
Here’s how to prepare and paint your wood fence like a pro!
Prepare the Ground Around Your Fence
The first step in painting your wood fence is, of course, preparation!
Start by mowing or removing grass or weeds that sit along the base of your fence. You will also want to remove piles of leaves that have accumulated at the bottom of your fence.
When you remove all organic matter from around your fence’s base, it’s time to place a drop cloth on the ground next to it to catch any debris that falls during the next steps.
Get Your Wood Fence Ready
Now that you have the area around your finish prepared, it’s time to get the fence ready!
To prepare your wood fence for painting, you will want to remove any residue left by the old coat of paint. Start by cleaning, scraping, and chipping off old paint from your pickets. Leaving these bits on your fence when you paint will result in a messy sub-par coat. You can use a pressure washer after you remove most of the paint chips to blast off any remaining residue stuck on the pickets.
For a fresh coat of paint to give off the most lustrous shine, you’ll need to do some sanding before you paint. Start with medium-grit sandpaper before finishing the fence off with fine-grit to give your wood fence a smooth, even surface to paint on.
Finally, check the fence for any insect or termite damage and replace any of the damaged wood!
Painting Your Wood Fence
Now for the fun part – actually painting your fence!
You will want to use stain or paint that stands up to the elements, such as moisture and UV rays. You can apply the paint or stain by using a roller or sprayers for the large areas and touch up finer places with a paintbrush.
After the painting is finished, let the fence dry for a few hours before coming into contact with it!
